Stuff I’ve Seen Go Wrong When Replacing Swing Bearings
2026-06-17
Putting in a new swing bearing on an excavator looks pretty simple on paper, but man, I’ve seen all kinds of things go sideways over the years.
The most common mistake is not cleaning the surface properly. A lot of crews are in a hurry and just give it a quick wipe. They leave behind old grease, dirt, or even tiny metal bits from the old bearing. Once the new one is in, those leftovers start causing uneven wear almost immediately.
Another big one is the grease. Some guys just grab whatever grease is sitting in the shop and pump it in. Wrong type or too much, and it creates problems down the line. I’ve also watched teams tighten the bolts any which way instead of going in a star pattern with the right torque. That puts uneven pressure on the bearing from day one.
Look, taking a bit more time to do it right really pays off. I’ve seen properly installed bearings run strong for years, while the rushed ones come back with issues in just a few months.
